Lauren Hanson, Ceramics Judge

lauren-hanson-2012-judge This year we are pleased to have as our Online Ceramic Show judge, Lauren Hanson.

Lauren’s bio:

Santa Barbara ceramic artist, Lauren Hanson, studied at UC Santa Barbara and then later transferred to California College of Art in Oakland , where she earned her BFA in painting in 1978.  For the past 20 years she has focused on clay, particularly high-fired and wheel-thrown functional ceramics.

.

Most of her pieces are decorated using an involved process that begins with a pencil drawing on bone dry clay, followed by incising, wax resist, slips, underglazes and a final glaze.  Other pieces are similarly decorated but are fired in a salt kiln available through the UCSB Recreation Department at the West Campus Pottery facility where she co-teaches a class with Dane Venaas.  A third line or work is carved in relief and covered with a celadon glaze.

.

Lauren draws her inspiration from nature as well as from historic imagery and patterns, especially those of Asian and Islamic origin.  Her work has been displayed in the Tierra Solida Gallery as well as in Ventura Pottery Guild shows where she has won awards.

.

Lauren, we appreciate your interest and participation as our 2012 ceramics judge.
