Chaoyi MacPherson – Grandfather
Chaoyi Macpherson came to Santa Barbara to live with her aunt and uncle four years ago. She is now 15 and she has a plan to become a dentist and work in the US. She visits her family in Beijing every year. Her grandfather died a few years ago, but she remembers him as her closest friend when she was a little girl. Her portrait of her Lao-ie was taken from the only photo she has of him. It is a carefully detailed graphite drawing of him, as a younger man, intently studying a book. Next to him is a lamp in blue that appears to be melting and some of the other surroundings are also melting. “I chose blue because it’s cold and sad and my memories of my grandfather are fading.” Chaoyi says that after she becomes a dentist she hopes that she will be able be able to donate extra income to children in the world “like kids in Africa. I’d also like to donate to a scholarship fund to help kids go to college.”
