The Grandparent Portrait Show, March 3-24, Faulkner Gallery.
Over 100 works by area high school and junior high school students featuring portraits of their grandparents in all media. Sponsored by the Student Art Fund of the Santa Barbara Art Association.
The Faulkner Gallery at the Santa Barbara Library will be filled with portraits of grandparents and significant elders of art students in the area’s public junior high and senior high schools. This show is sponsored by the Student Art Fund of the Santa Barbara Art Association, and funded in part by the Community Arts Grant Program using funds provided by the City of Santa Barbara in partnership with the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission.
“The Grandparent Portrait project is one that connects students with their family roots and pride,” said Audie Love, retired Art Teacher from Dos Pueblos High School, and member of the Student Art Fund Committee. “Getting students to focus on the faces of their grandparents is a way of strengthening those connections, and, possibly, of inspiring the students with the hopes and aspirations that these grandparent figures have for them.”
With over 500 works submitted for consideration, a jury process identified the 157 to be included in the show. Awards of Excellence will be made to outstanding entries and will be announced at 6 PM during the public reception on March 3. These awards, made through a formal jury process, are sponsored by area businesses and individuals, with the Best of Show Award provided by the Santa Barbara Art Association.
The Grandparents Show runs through March 24 at the Faulkner Gallery, during regular Library days and hours of operation.
