2016 Online Photography Show – Student Art Fund

10, Pit Stop, Heading up to a weekend long Christian Camp, we approached an area with a lot of snow. Of course our old bus could not make it up without snow chains, so we stopped and put the chains on, which took about half an hour. In that time, I noticed all the beautiful scenery around, so I got out if the bus and took some photos. I walked in front of the bus and saw how the light was seen through the fog, so I decided to take a picture of that. Since part of my job was to take pictures of the people at the camp, I decided to get some people outside the bus in the picture! I took the photo because you could see that people were enjoying the time with each other in this beautiful place. I really enjoyed editing it because there was a significant contrast all around the photo. I decided to make both the people and the headlights visible in the picture, so I did that, without placing an major focus on either.

6, Chiaroscuro, This shot was taken in the “Wall Street” corridor of the North Fork of the Virgin River (aka the “Zion Narrows”) in Zion National Park using a wide-normal focal length to maintain a relatively normal perspective. Lighting was purely natural reflected light coming from the orange cliffs illuminated in direct sun higher up on the canyon walls. Exposure was 40 seconds on a tripod at ISO 200 and f/5.6 for adequate depth of field with a 4 stop neutral density filter and polarizing filter to smooth the flowing water and control reflections off of the water and far left hand wall. Post processing was limited to minor lifting of the shadows and black point adjustments along with sharpening to bring out the textures of the wall.
